CRH Medical Joins Preventing Colorectal Cancer Membership

Not-for-profit advocacy organization Preventing Colorectal Cancer (PCC) is pleased to welcome CRH Medical to its membership. Founded in 2008, PCC’s mission is to educate the public and key stakeholders about the opportunities to reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer through regular screening and care options for patients and clinicians.

PCC strongly believes that a cancer prevented is better than a cancer cured, and the importance of prevention must not be underestimated. The organization, which is comprised of clinical thought leaders such as gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists and executive officers and founders of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, recognizes and supports colonoscopy as the Gold Standard colorectal cancer screening method.

Nine Tips for Eco Friendly Pest Control in the Garden this Summer

Floating row covers allow air, light and water through, but prevent insects like bean beetles and cabbage worms from reaching and damaging the plants.

Spots on tomatoes, holes in hosta leaves and wilting stems mean insects and diseases have moved into the garden. “Don’t let these intruders reduce the beauty and productivity of your landscape,” says Melinda Myers, host of The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything” DVD. Working in concert with nature to prevent and control these pests will provide gardeners with a bountiful harvest and landscape filled with beautiful blooms. Myers suggests taking these eco friendly pest control measures to manage unwanted pests this season.

Monitor. Taking regular walks through the landscape is not only good exercise, but it will improve a gardener’s mood and any problems will be discovered earlier when easier to control. Look for discolored leaves, spots, holes and wilting. Inspect the underside of the leaves and along the stems to uncover the cause of the problem.

Identify. Once a problem is discovered, identify the culprit. The local extension service, garden center or reliable internet resource can help. Once identified, plan the best way to manage the culprit.

Invite the Good Guys. Toads, lady beetles and birds help control many garden pests. Attract them to the garden by planting herbs and flowers to attract beneficial insects, adding a house for the toads, and birdbath for songbirds. Avoid using pesticides and learn to tolerate a bit of damage. A few aphids or caterpillars will bring in the ladybeetles, lacewings, birds and toads that are looking for a meal.

Clean up. Many insects and diseases can be managed and prevented with a bit of garden cleanup. A strong blast of water from the garden hose will dislodge aphids and mites, reducing their damage to a tolerable level. Or knock leaf-eating beetles and other larger insects off the plants and into a can of soapy water.

Pick off discolored leaves, prune off diseased stems and destroy. Be sure to disinfect tools with a 70% alcohol or one part bleach to nine parts water solution between cuts. This will reduce the risk of spreading the disease when pruning infected plants.

Adjust care. Reduce the spread and risk of further problems by adjusting maintenance strategies. Avoid overhead and nighttime watering that can increase the risk of disease. Use an organic nitrogen fertilizer like Milorganite which encourages slow steady growth that is less susceptible to insect and disease attacks.

Mulch the soil with shredded leaves, evergreen needles or woodchips. This will keep roots cool and moist during drought, improve the soil as they decompose, and also prevent soil borne diseases from splashing onto and infecting the plants.

Non-chemical Controls. If the problems continue, try some non-chemical options for insects. A yellow bowl filled with soapy water can attract aphids, a shallow can filled with beer and sunk in the ground will manage slugs, and crumpled paper under a flower pot for earwigs are just a few ways to trap and kill these pests.

Or cover the plants with floating row covers. These fabrics allow air, light and water through, but prevent insects like bean beetles and cabbage worms from reaching and damaging the plants.

Organic products. Organic products like insecticidal soap, Neem, horticulture oil and Bacillus thuringiensis can be used to control specific pests. And even though these are organic, they are designed to kill insects or disease organisms, so be sure to read and follow label directions carefully.

Take Note. Make notes on the problems and solutions in this season’s garden. Refer to the notes next year to insure a better job of monitoring and managing garden pests throughout the growing season. And when shopping for new plants, select the right plant for the location and choose resistant varieties whenever possible.

How to Make Windows XP More Efficient

Speed up Windows XP Defrag Process.

A simple way to do that is by restarting computer before doing defrag process to let operating system clean its swap/paging files and reset them to default. Another method to speed up defrag process is by bringing defrag process at startup. You can do that easily by editing registry.

Run Registry Editor.
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce.
Right-click a subkey RunOnce.
Select New-String Value.
Name it as Defrag and press enter twice.
Type Defrag.exe c: /f inside Value Data text box and click ok.
Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.

Defrag Process will start after you type password and press enter. Remember that the value in RunOnce will be deleted after running Defrag Process.

Clean Recent Run Windows XP Instruction List.

If you often use Run to run application, you should know that Windows XP always writes in registry called MRU (Most Recently Used). You can access it by clicking drop down arrow near Open text box.

MRU list is made in order to open the same application in the next session easily. But it will be difficult if  the list contains so many listed applications that it’s hard for you to find the desired application. Fortunately, there is a simple way to clean MRU list.

Run Regedit.exe.
Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU.
Right-click on RunMRU and select Export.
Name it as Clear Run MRU, click Save and close Regedit.exe.
Open Clear Run MRU.reg file with Notepad.
Add a minus sign (“-“) at the first of key name (in rectangle bracket).
Delete all of path keys.
Save and close Notepad.
Reboot Windows  or Log off.

Everytime you want to clean MRU list, just double-click Clear Run MRU.reg file.

Turn Off  Windows Messenger.

Windows Messenger automatically runs because of Outlook Express Program or another Microsoft web page. If you have already used MSN Messenger for chatting or video conferencing, you may not need  to use Windows Messenger anymore. That is why it needs to be removed from startup.

Open Run dialog box by pressing [Windows]+R or from Start-Run.
Type inside the dialog box: “Gpedit.msc and click OK to run Group Policy Editor.
Open Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger.
Double-click “Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run.
Choose Enabled then click OK.
Finally, close Group Policy Editor.
Use Letters to Access Local Folder Location.  

When we work in Local Area Network, usually we use “Map Network Drive” instruction to mark our drives with letters. For example: C for Local Disk, D for disk partition, or maybe H for our Network Neigbourhood’s drive. We can use letter to access folder location too. Why bother do several clicks to access folder location, if there’s a simple way just by doing double click. There are many Windows users who don’t realize this. We can use an old DOS instruction called SUBST.

Open Command Prompt from Start-All Programs-Accessories-Command Prompt.
Type: SUBST x: C:\[pathname]\[foldername], where “x” is virtual drive letter and “[pathname]\foldername]” is completed path you choose. An example: SUBST Z: C:\Windows\Fonts. Now, you can access Fonts Music folder just simply by clicking Z letter.

Make Instant Restore Point

Usually you make restore point manually by clicking Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore. Then, you will follow the wizard. There is an instant way just by hitting one click. All you need to do is making two lines simple VBScript by using WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) to access Class SystemRestore and to make Restore Point.

Run Notepad.
Type in the first line: Set IRP = getobject(“winmgmts:\.\root\default:Systemrestore”)
Type in the second line: MYRP = IRP.createrestorepoint (“My Restore Point”, 0, 100).
Save the file as InstantRestorePoint.vbs.

Every time you want to make Restore Point, just double-click on the file.

How to Work More Efficiently in Your Internet Marketing Business

The story goes like this: I work all day in my job, come home and work even more hours on my internet business while neglecting my spouse and kids. How can I work more efficiently so I don’t lose my mind and become a stranger to my family and friends?

This is a common problem that creates feelings of being overwhelmed and ultimately burnout and quitting.  The solution is rather simple, but not always apparent. Efficiency is a skill – learned like any other skill.

It starts with awareness. Become aware of where you are spending your time and energy with your internet business.

For the next week or two, keep a record of all the tasks and how much time spent on each of them. Pay attention to patterns.  Are there tasks you could outsource, like article writing?  Which activities are making you money and which are just a waste of time?

A huge time waster for many people is incessantly checking email several times a day.  A good habit to adapt is to check and respond to emails at set times each day. Preferably no more than 2 or 3 times a day.

Studies have shown that distractions or jumping from one task to another creates huge inefficiencies.  Creating a routine and setting aside blocks of time without distractions will make you much more efficient. Have a plan that has you work on the most important things first. Those would be the ones that are money makers. Also, always try to finish a task before moving onto the next.

 A good rule of thumb is to set aside at least an hour – preferably 2 hour blocks of uninterrupted time to focus on a task.  It can often take up to 20 minutes to get back to where you left off if you are distracted in the middle of a project.

Close your email servers and turn off your phone ringers and let anyone in your home know that this is your working time.

Also, spend your time on what makes the most money for the least effort. This will help you start outsourcing tasks sooner than later. Picture this, you come home from work and have a few hours to spend on your internet business.  You notice you spend 2 hours writing articles that generate traffic for your business.  It is a money making task, and one that eventually can be outsourced to free up your time to work on other money generating tasks.

You could have someone else write your articles so that you can spend the time you would’ve spent writing the article yourself to syndicating and repurposing those articles to leverage your time and exposure.

When I say re purposing, I mean, that article could also be tweaked into a blog post, a video, an audio, a pod cast, etc. Syndicating is submitting it to video and article aggregators like digg, tube mogul and the like.

If you get nothing else out of this article, remember the two words, Awareness and Focus. Efficiency takes time to get good at, but the reward is so worth it.
